Because of the recent events, many tourist attractions, sports centers and public places are closing until the end of March or until more information is announced from the government.

Dance studios are also closing to for the health and safety of its members and in respect to the social climate.

For many dancers, the studio is your second home. To find it close can be devastating, especially if you are preparing for a performance or event. So what to do if your studio has closed? And where to practice if you have an event soon?

Triple Check and Often

Check your dance studio’s website, social media and even call (unless instructed otherwise) to see if it is closed and when it will reopen. Many studios keep updating all forms of communication so check regularly. Also check if any upcoming performances and events are cancelled or postponed.

Research Other Dance Studios

There are some dance studios still open. LiD has a directory of dance studios across Japan. Research which ones are open. But double check the studio's social media before you head. Just in case.

Rent a Space

If you desperately need space to practice, you can rent studio space. Some dance studios rent out spaces or look for companies that do. It can get expensive, so try and group up with friends to make it cheaper. Type ダンスレンタルスタジオ (Dance Rental Studio) plus the city in a search engine and see the results.

Outside Spaces

There are some places outside that have lots of space, reflective glass that double up as mirrors and are away from pedestrians that dancers often congregate in. Places like Yoyogi Park in Yoyogi and Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro are well known places where dancers gather. Find your own using the criteria above. Make sure that it is a public space and it is not a hassle to bystanders.

Lessons Online

Online lessons are coming more popular these days because of how cheap and convenient they can be. Some are even free! Here are some websites:

The most important advice LiD can give dancers in Japan is to be mindful of current events and keep updated with the news. If your city ward has sent out guidelines and instructions, please follow them to ensure your own safety as well as others.
